The city of Youngstown is located south of Cleveland and northwest of Pittsburgh. The city is named after an early settler who founded Youngstown, John Young, who established the community’s
first sawmill and gristmill. As of 2006 Youngstown’s population was 83,906 and the county’s population was 586,939. Youngstown grew up like many other towns in the Ohio area, it was a steel town.
Youngstown steel industry thrived due to large deposits of coal and iron in the area. Youngstown became well known for the amount of steel they produced and was given the nickname “Steel Valley”.
Youngstown is not the great steel giant it was once known to be, but many businesses are still located in Youngstown’s downtown district, which recently was given a grant of $2 million to tear down
vacant lots to make room for business expansion.
